Tartan has made its mark in unexpected places, including the world of automobiles. Porsche's relationship with this iconic fabric dates back fifty years, to the launch of the first Porsche 911 Turbo. This pivotal moment not only set the stage for a long-standing partnership but also introduced a bold new aesthetic to automotive design. 

McLaughlin tartan was the highlight of the 911 Turbo

The inspiration came from a striking pair of tartan trousers worn by Anatole Lapine, Porsche's chief designer at the time. Captivated by the fabric's distinctive style, the design team began experimenting with tartan, ultimately incorporating it into the interiors of their cars. The fabric made its debut at the 1973 International Motor Show with the unveiling of the 911 RSR Turbo concept car, showcasing a vibrant blue, green, and black patterned tartan that added a unique flair to the automotive landscape.

Fast forward to today, and the tartan legacy is alive and well in the Porsche 50-Year Turbo Collection. Drawing inspiration from the Dress Mackenzie Tartan, this collection reinterprets the classic fabric for a modern audience, seamlessly integrating it into car interiors, clothing, and accessories. As tartan continues to evolve within Porsche's design philosophy, it remains a symbol of innovation and tradition, bridging the past and the future on the open road.

The 1955 coming-of-age film Clueless is an iconic cult classic that features main characters Cher and Dionne in their matching tweed suits.
